These lullabies (like those of Op.28) do not correspond exactly to the atmosphere of pieces one plays or sings to children to help them fall asleep in a cocoon of tenderness and simplicity. Melancholy and occasionally complex, they express rather the desire of a (future) father to affectionately pass on the real -life, constructed experience of an adult. The first , dedicated to his son Jean (born in july 1927) , begins with a singularly syncopated, and even jazzy, enthusiasm before concluding in quasi -questioning expectation. The second, written in the Dorian mode, unfolds gently, smooth and flowing, whereas the third, slower and borrowing from the Aeolian mode, expresses itself in an atmosphere bathed in transparent colour. The melody rises over a superposition of ternary and binary rhythms, almost hesitant and highly poetic.
