Joaquin Turina composed the Second Sonata in 1934 and called it Sonata Española because it was his only sonata performed outside of Spain. Considered by critics has the best of his three sonatas, it was also the composer's favorite. A lento con variaciones in both preceded and followed by several slow bars and the indefinite tonality of the theme calls forth the full resources of the Violin. The theme is made the subject of variations (the Andalousion petenera is followed by the Basque Zortzico) before concluding in its original form. Three follows a brief scherzo and the work ends with a finale in the form of a sonata comprising a repetition of the introduction that has preceded it.
