The Sonata for Violin and Piano (1943) was written for the violinist Ginette Neveu who was die in1943 off the coast of the Azores in the same plane crash that took the life of the boxer Marcel Cerdan . Regarding this composition Poulenc confided to Claude Rostand:" having always wished to dedicate a work to Lorca's memory (in such cases literature can intrude rather unpleasantly) and inspired by one of his celebrate verses:"the guitar causes dreams to weep," I first composed an andante-cantilena,vaguely Spanish. Then,as a finale,i conceived a presto tragico of which the rhythm and lively momentum would be abruptly broken by a slow and tragic coda. An exuberant first movement was meant to establish the atmosphere".
